Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s The Wipers Times tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme. Following a sell-out tour, The Wipers Times transfers to the West End.

In a bombed out building during the First World War in the French town of Ypres (mis-pronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches, they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the front line. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.

****
“What this play brilliantly conveys, without any sentimentality and with copious gags, is that the production of a few fragile pieces of paper came almost to matter more to those chaps involved than life itself.”

“A quite magnificent stage play”

The Wipers Times Customer Feedback

2017-05-14 Really enjoyed the show. Entertaining from start to finish.Thoroughly recommend it.
2017-05-11 A unique way of showing how the British soldier dealt with the dreadful conditions of WW1. The audience understood the humour , there seemed to be a feeling running thought the whole of the audience of an understanding how the real soldiers coped with the war. It has to be made into a film.
2017-05-07 Very witty writing as one would expect from Ian Hislop. Fascinating part of the WW1 Trenches story. Well acted, kept us both interested, a thoroughly good evening of Theatre. This was a gift from my sister in New Zealand who had heard Ian being interviewed on Radio 2 by Graham Norton, it was a great surprise birthday present,
2017-04-26 Very entertaining show. Witty and amusing, with good acting
2017-04-22 Wonderful laugh a minute comedy/drama/musical by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. (shame the very homely and intimate theatre is in such drastic need of refurbishment) Great cast perfectly suited to the parts, who gave it everything. Only other comment relates to a complaint I always make about theatre tickets, the face value bears no relationship to the real price and I think the practices of adding booking fees and transaction costs should be banned.
