Labour of Love, a new comedy by James Graham

Michael Grandage Company and Headlong present the world première of James Graham’s new play Labour of Love, starring Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig. This razor-sharp political comedy reunites James Graham and director Jeremy Herrin following their previous collaboration on This House, and plays at the Noël Coward Theatre from the 27 September for 10 weeks only.

Labour MP David Lyons cares about modernisation and “electability”… his constituency agent, Jean Whittaker cares about principles and her community. Set away from the Westminster bubble in the party’s traditional northern heartlands, this is a clash of philosophy, culture and class against the backdrop of the Labour Party over 25 years as it moves from Kinnock through Blair into Corbyn… and beyond?

‘Knockabout funny and politically incisive. Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig are magic.’ - The Times

 ‘A brilliant new play.’

- The Guardian

‘James Graham is British playwriting's Wunderkind.’

- Evening Standard

‘Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig are terrific.’

- Time Out

‘You'll emerge from the theatre punching the air!’

-Whatsonstage

2017-11-22 The play was exactly as I had thought when I chose it. Funny and perceptive and even informative about politics!!
2017-11-21 Service was easy and efficient
2017-11-14 Excellent acting, great play and easy ticket collection. Great night out but not cheap !
2017-11-11 A thought-provoking and endlessly entertaining comedy, satirical, slapstick, slick acting, great scene changes, clever costume. Great cast, wonderful play. Sneakily giving out pretty important messages about the Labour Party, it's history and its future at the same time. Although probably preaching to the converted :) I should have added, buying and picking up the theatre tickets easy as pie - giving me a wonderful theatre experience - as it should be.
2017-11-09 A brilliant show and the only reason it didn't get five stars is that sometimes it was extremely difficult to hear the dialogue. It was a very fast-paced show and sometimes one of the actors did not project as much as I would have liked.
2017-11-09 I thoroughly enjoyed Labour of Love. So very funny and brilliantly acted by Martin & Tamsin. Normally I find bad language horrid but this show was so well acted and so funny it didn't matter and indeed was so part of the script I didn't think about it. A very clever story, super sets. Totally brilliant. well done to everyone. best thing I've seen for ages.
2017-11-08 Brilliantly funny, well staged and cleverly written. A great experience
2017-11-08 It was a fantastic play and we'd love to go and see it again if it was on for longer.
2017-11-08 Brilliant clever inventive play with real parallels to our current times , wonderfully acted Marvellous .
2017-11-02 Great writing and superb acting
2017-11-01 Brilliant play. Superbly enjoyable night from start to finish. Would love to see it again.
2017-10-29 Very clever and funny.Brilliant acting.
2017-10-29 Excellent acting, dialogue and production Would have given it 5 but too much unnecessary use of the F word at the beginning. Swearing doesn’t bother me much personally but I think it very unimaginative
2017-10-26 Well acted, informative, funny, really good show.
2017-10-24 The actors were extremely good and the play well written
2017-10-23 The Story was really well told, Tamsin was fantastic! We were disappointed Martin hadn't made it, but his stand in, after a hesitant start, soon gave it his all.
2017-10-22 Loved it; acting brilliant from Grief and Freeman. Would have been 5 stars but for the dip in comedy before the interval for about 20mins
2017-10-19 Great fun, enlightening and moving
2017-10-18 Excellent play, beautifully acted. It offered food for thought as well as being laugh out loud funny.
2017-10-15 Great! We were initially disappointed when Sarah Lancashire withdrew but Tamsin Greig was brilliant and when we knew she was the replacement we still looked forward to the show. We were pretty gutted to turn up on the night to find Martin Freeman wasn't going to be on either. Despite this George Beach did a good job and it must be very stressful to know you weren't who the audience was expecting and people would feel let down. It's a fab play, funny and intelligent...go and see it.
2017-10-15 Great play despite the fact that Martin Freeman was indisposed on the evening. George Beach the under study was brilliant and so was Tamsin Grieg.
2017-10-13 Interesting and amusing play, but disappointed that Martin Freeman did not perform that night.
