Woman in Black Review

A legacy of vengeance

An increasingly petrifying succession of unexplained noises, chilling events and haunting by the Woman in Black fills up Arthur Kipps’ evenings in Eel Marsh House. The depressing and secluded House belonged to an elderly widow, Alice Drablow, who was its sole inhabitant. But was she unaccompanied when death embraced her?

As days pass and events unravel, Arthur, a young solicitor who was summoned to Crythin Gifford to wrap up Alice’s estate begins to discover the terrible secrets that lie behind the shuttered windows of Eel Marsh House. The sighting of a certain worn out young woman, dressed all in black, at Alice’s funeral, started in him a creeping sense of unease, a feeling which was deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.

The time spent in Eel Marsh House altered the route of Arthur’s life, forever! And he fell prey to the Woman in Black’s vengeance.

Years later, as an old man, he narrates his ghastly experiences to a younger man in a frantic attempt to jettison the ghosts of the past. The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor's experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.

The Woman in Black is a 1983 thriller fiction novel by Susan Hill. Adapted into a theatric performance, the play was first staged in Scarborough, UK in 1987.
It was very well received and moved to the Fortune Theatre in London's West End in 1989 where it still runs today. It is the second longest running play in the history of the West End. Unanimously acclaimed by the critics and now in its 23rd year in the West End, The Woman in Black combines the supremacy and force of live theatre with the cinematic excellence of film noir.

It is a clever tale that coalesces the elements of both a suspenseful story and a detective movie, one which will make you jump out of your seat in fright. It is extraordinary that with the most basic props, minimal set, a few sound effects along with the ambiance of the drama and your own imagination this play can scare you stiff!

Come, watch and become one of the over 7 million people having lived to tell the tale of one of the most exciting, gripping, spine-tingling and successful theatre events ever staged.

You will have the scariest time of your life that is IF you live through it!

Great sevice...tickets at box office as promised and answered my email questions quicky. will come straight to you next time. Also tickets were great price compared to other agents.
Great show and awesome actors. It's completely different from the movie tho. Fortunately I found this site and bought the last minute deals.
Super website for finding last minute deals, was sceptical as unsure about web site, but received serial emails to confirm ticket was at the box office awaiting pick up. Seats was also not bad for the price I paid. Said best available but that usually means the ones furthest back! This wasn't the case at all. Was till high up but was in the front. Show it self was excellent, even for a two man show (3 inc the woman in black) great performance of the show, would decently buy from web site again!
My fifteen year old daughter clung onto my hand throughout the entire performance.
Visited with husband, Mum and 2 teenage girls as a change from a Musical show. All really enjoyed it and there were several jump out of seat moments from the teens! Purchasing and picking up tickets from Box Office all went smoothly.
excellent show and acting. easy to buy tickets from this outlet, very fast.
I was very happy with the service I received from theatreticketsdirect. The two actors were very good but I was expecting it to be a bit more scary.
Very well acted but did not find it as scary as advertised. It was also spoilt by various school parties pretnding to scream and giggling after each scream.
Excellent play, brilliantly portrayed, spell binding evening
A superb performance. The actors worked incredibly hard to create a chilling atmosphere and build the suspense. With all of the big lavish productions in London it is great to see a show that relies so heavily on good acting and that was definitely on display here. Well worth seeing.
