Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical The Illusionist is set to make its world premiere in London’s West End in September 2026. This eagerly awaited production marks another exciting addition to the legendary composer’s portfolio, promising to captivate audiences with a blend of magic and mystery.
Adapted from the acclaimed 2006 film directed by Neil Berger and starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel, The Illusionist draws its story from Steven Millhauser’s novella Eisenheim the Illusionist. Set in Vienna around 1900, the narrative follows Eisenheim, a gifted illusionist whose spectacular tricks spark intrigue and upheaval across the city. The show’s musical score features original songs including “Invincible,” “I Only Came To Say Goodbye,” and “Always Everything To Me.”
The production will be directed by award-winning Jamie Lloyd, known for his work on Evita and Sunset Boulevard, and produced by Michael Harrison, Lloyd Webber’s long-term collaborator behind hits like Hello, Dolly! and Starlight Express. The book is penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League), with British singer-songwriter Bruno Major contributing to the music.
While the specific West End venue is yet to be announced, Harrison has expressed a strong preference for London as the show’s home. This announcement comes as Lloyd Webber’s revival of Evita begins its run at the London Palladium this June, starring Rachel Zegler as Eva Perón.
Andrew Lloyd Webber shared this news at the 2025 Tony Awards, a night that celebrated multiple successes for his team, including Sunset Boulevard’s Best Musical Revival win. Fans can look forward to The Illusionist as a magical new chapter in West End theatre.
