Mark Gatiss’s acclaimed production of A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story is returning to London for the festive season, with a new cast led by Neil Morrissey and Matthew Cottle.
The spooky reimagining of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale will play at Alexandra Palace Theatre from 22 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, marking the show’s third Christmas in the capital.
Neil Morrissey, best known for Men Behaving Badly and Waterloo Road, will step into the role of Jacob Marley. He joins Matthew Cottle (Bridgerton, The Windsors), who reprises his acclaimed performance as Ebenezer Scrooge.
The company also includes Charlotte Bate as Mrs Cratchit, Michaela Bennison as Caroline, Henry Davis as Bob Cratchit, Elliot Douglas as Tiny Tim, Michael Mears as the Narrator, Kalifa Taylor as Belle, Mark Theodore as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Lance West as Fred. The cast is rounded out by Jacob Daniels and Maya de Faria as swings.
First staged at Nottingham Playhouse in 2021, Gatiss’s production combines Dickens’s moral fable with the atmosphere of a chilling ghost story, using striking stagecraft to bring the supernatural Victorian world to life. After transferring to Alexandra Palace, the show was also filmed for UK cinemas and later broadcast on BBC4, building a reputation as a modern Christmas theatre tradition.
Directed by Adam Penford, the production features design by Paul Wills, lighting by Philip Gladwell, sound by Ella Wahlström, video design by Nina Dunn, movement by Georgina Lamb, and music by Tingying Dong.
