Trainspotting The Musical will make its long-awaited West End premiere this summer, bringing Irvine Welsh’s iconic story to the stage in a bold new format. The production opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 15 July 2026, marking the first time the cult classic has been reimagined as a full-scale musical in London’s theatre district.

Written by Welsh and based on his original novel, the show is directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, with music and lyrics by Welsh alongside Stephen McGuinness. The story reunites audiences with familiar characters including Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly, exploring their lives decades after the events that made them cultural icons in the 1990s.

The original 1996 film adaptation, starring Ewan McGregor, became a defining moment in British cinema, earning major recognition and cementing its place among the most influential UK films of its time. This new stage version builds on that legacy while offering a fresh perspective through music and live performance.

Leading the cast is Robbie Scott as Renton, making his West End debut in the role. Additional casting is expected to be announced in the coming months as anticipation builds ahead of the opening.

Welsh has described the musical as a more emotionally driven take on the story, blending its raw edge with humour and energy. The production combines well-known tracks associated with the original film with newly written material, creating a dynamic and immersive score.

The creative team includes set and costume designer Colin Richmond, musical supervisor Stuart Morley, video designer Douglas O’Connell, choreographer Christina Andrea, lighting designer Ian Scott and sound designer Rory Madden.

With its mix of nostalgia and reinvention, Trainspotting The Musical is set to deliver a powerful new chapter for a story that continues to resonate with audiences today.
