Michael Sheen Returns To Amadeus

Michael Sheen is set to return to London’s West End in a new revival of Amadeus, taking on a role that further cements his unique connection to Peter Shaffer’s iconic play. In a rare achievement, Sheen becomes the first major actor to have played both central characters in the production across his career.

He first appeared in Amadeus in 1998 at the Old Vic, portraying the gifted and unpredictable Mozart. The play explores the intense rivalry between Mozart and fellow composer Antonio Salieri, a figure whose reputation has been shaped as much by drama as by history. Years later, Sheen returned to the story in the role of Salieri, offering a deeper and more complex take on the jealous court composer.

Now, he reprises Salieri once again in a new production directed by Jeremy Herrin, alongside rising Welsh actor Callum Scott Howells as Mozart. The production is part of Sheen’s renewed focus on theatre, following his decision to step back from Hollywood and launch the Welsh National Theatre.

After opening in Cardiff, the production will transfer to the Noël Coward Theatre in London for a limited run from April to August 2027. It also marks Sheen’s first appearance in a West End theatre in over 20 years.

The transfer highlights a growing trend of Welsh National Theatre productions reaching wider audiences. For London theatre-goers, it offers the chance to see a celebrated actor return to one of his defining works, bringing fresh insight to a role he has revisited over decades.
