James Norton is set to take on one of theatre’s most iconic roles when he stars as Hamlet in a major new West End production opening in autumn 2027. The revival will be directed by celebrated German theatre-maker Thomas Ostermeier, marking his first time directing a Shakespeare play in English.
Norton, who has earned widespread acclaim for both his stage and screen performances, described the opportunity as both exciting and daunting. He said playing Hamlet is a role that carries enormous expectations but expressed confidence in working alongside Ostermeier, whose productions have inspired him for years. The actor added that he is looking forward to discovering a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic prince under the director’s guidance.
Ostermeier is no stranger to Hamlet, having created a highly acclaimed production that premiered in 2008 and has continued touring internationally for nearly two decades. Known for bold and inventive storytelling, he believes Norton is ideally suited to portray the troubled Prince of Denmark and is eager to explore Shakespeare’s original text with an English-speaking cast for the first time.
The new production follows a number of recent high-profile West End revivals of Hamlet, with the last major London staging starring Andrew Scott in 2017. Further details, including the theatre and performance dates, are expected to be announced at a later stage.
The production will be presented by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, two companies behind several successful recent theatre projects. Norton was most recently seen on stage in A Little Life and is also preparing to appear as Brian Epstein in Sam Mendes’ upcoming four-film series about The Beatles.
With an award-winning actor in the title role and one of Europe’s most respected directors at the helm, the production is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated theatre events of 2027.
