Andrew Barth Feldman To Star In New Musical Nero

Andrew Barth Feldman will take on the title role in Nero, a new musical about the infamous Roman emperor, opening at Southwark Playhouse Elephant later this year. Performances will begin on 2 November, with the limited London season continuing until 5 December.

Feldman is best known to theatre audiences for playing Evan Hansen in the Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen. His screen credits include the 2023 comedy No Hard Feelings, in which he starred opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Nero will see the actor return to musical theatre in a role that promises a very different exploration of fame, authority and public perception.

The production is written by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, the award-winning creative partnership behind Spring Awakening. Their celebrated musical became a major Broadway success by combining a contemporary rock score with a story set in 19th-century Germany. With Nero, the writers turn their attention to Ancient Rome, reconsidering one of history’s most controversial rulers through a modern theatrical lens.

Nero became Roman emperor while still a teenager and remains associated with extravagance, political violence and the Great Fire of Rome. The new musical will examine the man behind that notorious reputation, bringing his story to the stage for a contemporary audience.

Lindsay Posner will direct the London production. His extensive theatre credits include acclaimed productions of A View from the Bridge and Noises Off. James Cousins will provide the choreography, while Phil Bateman serves as musical supervisor and vocal arranger.

The wider creative team includes musical director Ben McQuigg, designer Georgia Lowe, lighting designer Robbie Butler and sound designer Tony Gayle.

With a leading Broadway performer, the writers of Spring Awakening and one of history’s most dramatic figures at its centre, Nero is set to be a notable addition to London’s autumn musical theatre season.
