Death Note: The Musical has arrived at London’s Barbican Theatre, transforming the internationally successful manga into a spectacular new stage production for a strictly limited season.
Based on the bestselling series created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the musical follows brilliant student Light Yagami after he discovers a mysterious supernatural notebook. When someone’s name is written inside it, that person dies.
Light begins using the Death Note to eliminate criminals, believing he can create a better world. However, his actions attract the attention of the mysterious detective L, triggering an increasingly dangerous battle of intelligence, deception and justice.
Xander Pang leads the Death Note: The Musical cast as Light, opposite Colin Ryan as L. Stephanie Zaharis plays Misa Amane, with Telly Leung as the mischievous death god Ryuk and Grace Mouat as Rem. Paolo Montalban appears as Light’s father, Soichiro Yagami.
The production features music by Frank Wildhorn, the composer behind Bonnie & Clyde and Jekyll & Hyde, with lyrics by Jack Murphy and a book by Ivan Menchell. A dramatic rock-influenced score, striking visuals and energetic choreography bring the dark supernatural world of Death Note to life.
The musical previously attracted enormous demand when a concert version played in London during 2023. Its return marks the first fully staged English-language production, featuring a revised script, new songs and an expanded company.
Audiences do not need to have read the manga or watched its screen adaptations to enjoy the story. The central confrontation between Light and L provides an accessible thriller filled with moral questions, unexpected twists and theatrical spectacle.
Death Note: The Musical tickets are available for performances at the Barbican Theatre until 12 September 2026. With its London engagement lasting only a matter of weeks, fans should book soon to experience this cult phenomenon live on stage.
