Sacha Baron Cohen will lead the cast of The Popinjay Cavalier, a new West End play written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Opening at the Phoenix Theatre on 18 March 2027, the production brings together two of entertainment’s most recognisable names for a comedy set in 1830s Europe.

The Popinjay Cavalier marks Tarantino’s first play written specifically for the stage. Inspired by swashbuckling adventures, the story promises deception, mistaken appearances and disguises. Further plot details and Baron Cohen’s role have yet to be revealed, with the remaining cast due to be announced later.

For audiences familiar with Tarantino’s films, the production offers a chance to discover how his storytelling translates to live theatre. The filmmaker behind Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Django Unchained will take charge of both the script and direction, making this a significant new chapter in his career.

Baron Cohen is best known for creating Ali G, Borat and Brüno, characters whose outrageous behaviour and uncomfortable encounters helped establish his international reputation. His work has earned him two BAFTAs and three Golden Globes, alongside nominations for Academy Awards and Emmys. He has expressed his excitement about collaborating with Tarantino, adding another high-profile project to a career spanning comedy and dramatic performances.

The production is being co-produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Friedman’s theatre credits include Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Paddington the Musical, while Sony distributed Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Tarantino previously revealed that the script was complete and that staging the play would be his next major undertaking. His move into theatre comes after years of discussing plans to finish his filmmaking career after ten films.

With Baron Cohen leading Tarantino’s West End debut, the production gives London theatregoers a new comedy to look forward to in spring 2027.
