More about Toast

Popping right out of the toaster from the 2018 Edinburgh Festival, Nigel Slater’s Toast butters itself up for a highly anticipated run at The Other Palace! The 2004 award-winning memoir by Nigel Slater was first adapted into a 2010 BBC film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Freddie Highmore before being transformed into a hit new play that has already taken the Edinburgh Festival stage by storm!

Mrs. Slater is suffering from chronic asthma that prevents her from preparing proper meals for her family. She is forced to resort to tinned food and…toast. After her untimely death, Nigel’s father continues in a similar cooking fashion until Nigel decides he’s had enough with ‘eating what’s put in front of him.’ Hungry and armed with a spatula, Nigel competes with his stepmother to win over his father’s heart.

Nigel Slater’s best-selling 2004 publication, Toast: The Story of a Boy’s Hunger, has been translated into 5 different languages and won six literary awards, including British Biography of the Year at the National Book Awards. Shortly following its critical success, the memoir was adapted into the smash-hit, BBC made-for-tv film Toast.

Nigel Slater is a world-renowned cook and columnist who has been contributing to the Observer since 1993 with his popular cookery columns. He has written over a dozen cookbooks including his two-volume Tender, The Kitchen Diaries, and Appetite. His 2018 Christmas cookbook entitled The Christmas Chronicles won the Fortnum and Mason’s Food Book award while his collection of essays on British cuisine and cookery entitled Eating for England was dramatised and broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Slater’s most notable television specials include Nigel Slater’s Simple Cooking, Nigel Slater’s Great British Biscuit, Nigel Slater: Eating Together, and Nigel Slater's Middle East.

The Other Palace officially opened its doors in February 2017, and is a home and breeding ground for musicals at various stages of development. The Other Palace focuses on four key areas: programming, creative use of spaces, musical theatre development and audience engagement. The main theatre is the heart of The Other Palace, where the programme consists of full productions, work in progress productions and festivals of new work. By day the studio is available for composers, librettists, lyricists, directors and choreographers to discover and create new material. By night the space builds on the current St. James Studio model to offer a diverse programme including cabaret, music, musical theatre and crossover acts. The theatre features an open mic bar in the hope that it becomes a genuine hub for anyone interested in the musical.
